Artifact Overview

About fifteen hundred women paraded silently down New York City's Fifth Avenue on August 29, 1914, to protest against war. (The conflict in Europe, what became known as World War I, had just begun.) The women wore black or light-colored clothing with black armbands, signifying mourning and loss during war. Frances Garrison Villard, chairwoman of the peace parade committee, wore this armband.
