Artifact Overview

Wilbur and Orville Wright continually refined their early airplanes to improve performance and reliability. In 1910, they experimented with a horizontal surface behind the rear rudders, as seen in this photo. The modification effectively gave the plane two elevators: the Wrights' usual front-mounted version and the newly added adjustable rear surface.
